Unbeknownst to many, the The Rhode Island Bar Association has a program to link together those in need of legal assistance with lawyers who are willing to donate their time. This matching program is focused on helping those with limited financial resources obtain legal counsel. The program has also been known to match budding non-profits with a lawyer who can help them submit their 501(c)3 application. For details visit the Volunteer Lawyer Program. Owen Johnson

meme@brown

For those of us who don’t know, that stuffy, ivy-clad school up on College Hill boasts a tiny but renowned Multimedia and Electronic Music Department. This unusual program aims to produce “art and research that traverse the boundaries between computer music, installation, video, theater and dance.” Building on Brown’s history of innovation in electronic imaging and human-computer interface technology, and drawing upon collaboration with the community of graphic, light, and industrial designers at RISD, the meme@brown as it is called is a unique Ivory Tower lab for weird, 21st Century performance science. Undergraduate and graduate students who do their work here concern themselves with pushing our civilization’s understanding on how humans and computers can interact in producing music (or noise), images, movement, text, and other stimili.

Not sure what the hell this all means? You can learn more by punching letters and numbers into your keyboard and clicking your mouse to the meme@brown website, but this would be way too 1997. Instead, come check out this Friday’s performance by meme student Luke Fischbeck–a.k.a. Lucky Dragons–who together with co-conspirators will create an interactive sound and light installation on April the 8th. The show–Luke’s thesis project–will feature tactile music-making, a fiddle, a parachute, and an eclectic audience, to be sure. The fun will kick off after 9 at a Downtown loft space (109 mathewson @ washington, Providence). Admission is FREE, but bring food or drink to share with the kids. For more info, see Luke’s poster about the event. Leo Beletsky

East Coast Greenway

The East Coast Greenway is a project aiming to connect all the major cities of the East Coast along a continuous, off-road path. It turns out that Rhode Island has one of the most active greenway planning committees. The RI committee has a party planned in May to honor their founder which seems like a good way to connect with this effort for those interested. Also interesting is a map of the RI Greenway plan.

For the city dwellers among us, visit the Providence website for more information about bike paths in the city. Owen Johnson
