Opening Our Eyes: The Human Cost of Poverty

September 23, 2008 by Owen Johnson

Hunger affects 1 in every 8 Rhode Island households. There are 35,000 children living in poverty in Rhode Island - that’s 15% of the state’s population under 18….WHY?

Social Venture Partners Rhode Island invites you to participate in an interactive simulation to experience the challenges and frustrations of living and working in poverty. This unique experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive.

Exchange City, Johnson & Wales Harborside Campus
321 Harborside Boulevard, Providence, RI 02905

There are also volunteer opportunities to help with the simulation. Please direct any questions to Social Venture Partners Rhode Island at 274-4564 ext. 3179 or amy@svpri.org

I was impressed by how many people from various sectors attended this event on a rainy Monday morning. Perhaps this is a demonstration to how concerned people are about poverty in our state.
